Welcome to the ASB-MA Crosscutting Assessment List. This list is intended to facilitate information exchange and discussion on items related to ASB's Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA) to serve as a cross-cutting assessment entitled "Forest and Agroecosystem Tradeoffs in the Tropics". A concept note for ASB’s cross-cutting assessment can be accessed at .
ASB was selected by the Board of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA) to serve as a cross-cutting assessment entitled "Forest and Agroecosystem Tradeoffs in the Tropics". The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA) --launched on June 5, 2001 (World Environment Day) by the United Nations, scientific groups, governments, foundations, and other international agencies--is an extensive study of the state of the world's major ecosystems, including forests, grasslands, rivers and lakes, farmlands, and oceans. The vision for the MA is to achieve for the Convention for Biological Diversity (CBD) what the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was able to do for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC): namely, providing a firm scientific platform for global debate on a major environmental issue. ASB's collaboration and participation with the MA will provide additional impetus behind ASB's global activities in integrating poverty reduction and tropical biodiversity conservation.
This distribution list links over 100 members of advanced research institutions and international organizations, national systems (NARS) and conservation counterparts, local and national NGOs, other national agencies and universities in developing countries, private universities and associations, international consortia and Future Harvest Centres.
