pbg -- Plant Breeding Group Systemwide Program on Participatory Research and Gender Analysis

TO: Members of the Plant Breeding Group
Systemwide Program on Participatory Research and Gender Analysis

This message is starting off an email list-serve, connecting members
of the Plant Breeding Group with the SWP PRGA. We now number about
fifty, with representation from the CGIAR, NARS, university and NGO
sector.

Given that all of you have expressly asked to be added to this
list-serve, I sense that a lengthy introduction is unnecessary.
The purpose of this communication network is to share information
(on meetings, relevant publications, etc.); and stimulate
interactive dialogue/debate on issues related to Participatory
Approaches in Plant Breeding. Each of you is welcome to
initiate dialogue through this network.

Note that a second list-serve will also be set up under the aegis of
the Plant Breeding Group to focus on ways of strengthening farmers'
own breeding and varietal maintenance systems.

The rationale for havingtwo sub-discussions within the Plant Breeding
Group is to save everyone's time (and money). When sketching lists of
scientists and development workers interested in approaches to:
a) "Involving farmers more effectively in formal breeding work"
and then those focusing on
b) "Working with farmers on their own breeding and varietal maintenance
systems", it became clear that there was relatively little overlap
between the groups. We want to avoid flooding colleagues with emails
that are outside their domains of interest.

So with this note, the general breeding email list-serve has been
initiated.

Welcome to all.
