Sat21 -- SAT21 Follow-up

About Sat21
English (USA)

Welcome to the SAT 21 participant listserver.

I would first like to take this opportunity to express my thanks to all of you for your participation in the International Conference on Science and Technology for Managing Plant Genetic Diversity in the 21st Century (SAT21). I think we can all agree that the opportunity to listen to and to meet with other scientists working in a wide range of disciplines and from different parts of the world was both exciting and educational.

SAT21 participant listserver
As we agreed in Kuala Lumpur, the purpose of this server is to continue the exchange of ideas, information and knowledge relevant to the improved conservation and use of plant genetic resources, by collecting and circulating follow-up information and conference feedback. As this listserver is an open forum, you will be able to reply directly to the author of a message by using the "reply" function of your email program. To send messages and items of interest to the entire participant list you should use the "reply-to-all" function of your email program. All members are encouraged to introduce themselves to the other subscribers of the SAT21 participant listserver by sending as their first message their name, occupation and the organization to which they are affiliated. This listserver will remain operational for six months during which time it will be moderated by IPGRI. Following this, based on its usage, it will be decided whether or not to continue. You will be advised of any change in due course.

Abstracts
Please note that Abstracts of the papers and posters presented at the conference have been posted on the new conference website at http://www.ipgri.cgiar.org/sosindex.htm. (please update your bookmarks to reflect the change of web address). I would be grateful if you would check all authors and details and send any corrections to owner-sat21@lists.cgiar.org. Please also send her details of any poster abstracts that were presented at the conference and have not been included.

Follow up

Proceedings
All participants will be receiving a copy of the proceedings, which will be published by CABI in mid 2001. The editors are currently working on the papers and hope to finalize the manuscripts for submission to CABI early October of this year.

Synthesis Paper
A synthesis paper summarizing the major outcomes and recommendations arising from the conference and their implications for future conservation efforts, is currently being produced and this will be included in the proceedings and posted on the conference web site. It aims to serve as a strategic guide to future research needs on plant genetic resources management.

Future activities
An Interim Steering Committee, consisting of the International Programme Committee plus some co-opted members, was established in Kuala Lumpur to explore the best ways of maintaining the momentum which has been generated by the conference. Aspects that will be investigated will include whether or not to establish an international plant genetic resources society and ways and means of organizing a series of conferences over time. The Interim Steering Committee will be led by Dr. Moise Houssou (Benin) and Dr. Brad Fraleigh (Canada) as Co-chairs, and IPGRI will provide logistical and other support as required, including management of the above listserver. A decision on future activities will be arrived at in a participatory way, drawing upon an evaluation of SAT21 by IPGRI and a moderated discussion through the listserver. In any future activities, a high priority will be given to ensuring that as many members of the genetic resources community as possible can participate, including those who do not have ready access to electronic communications.

Cancelling subscription
If at any time you would like to terminate your subscription to the listserver, please send an email to sat21-leave@lists.cgiar.org.

I look forward to an interesting exchange on this listserver as a follow-up to the Conference.

Best wishes
